An APPA and VPPY 2015 wrap up | Award winning wedding & portrait photographer

Every year as an AIPP member we agonise, print and edit images over and over again, and throw them into the ring for State VPPY (Victorian Photographer of the year) and National APPA (Australian Professional Photography Awards.

State was held in April, and I was so excited to win my first ever awards in the wedding category, not just 1 but 3!  My entries into family were not awarded but scoring a couple points short of Silver in the high professional practice bracket.

This leads into preparation for APPA, how to narrow it down to just 4 images! I decided to enter my 3 wedding silver and a brand new family portrait. Judging was held this past weekend, and while naturally I was a little disappointed not to be awarded, it was still amazing to be part of. My 4 images scored well in high professional practice. Friends and colleagues did AWESOME, awards so deserved and winning titles (still whoohooing).

Its hard to explain what APPA weekend means to those who aren’t involved in the industry, why do we do this? Your clients love your work anyway… yes that is so true! But to have an industry weekend full of equals and mentors, to immerse yourself in the printed image is why we keep coming back. Seeing an image online is one thing, but in physical print, they can blow your mind. Such a huge reminder to PRINT YOUR IMAGES, hang them on your walls or fill some albums…

Something else awesome that came out of APPA weekend, at the gala dinner presentation night, the ACCC are now recognising the AIPP as the professional body of photographers in Australia… taken from the AIPP official statement
“..An Australian first, the development will enable the AIPP’s 2,000 Accredited Photographers to offer clients and customers further reassurance of their competence and reliability as a working photographer or video producer through a certified ‘symbol of trust’ from the Government agency. As the photographic industry is not held accountable to the same legal status and regulatory requirements as other Government and state-regulated professions, the AIPP believes that the ACCC certification will bring a new level of authority to practicing professionals, in addition to the set of voluntary requirements that members already adhere to…..”

All in all, this leaves me excited and challenged for 2016!  Next up Christmas?! Yep… watch this space for a last minute offer
