Christmas photos that don’t scream Christmas.

I know, slightly ridiculous coming from someone trying to convince you to book Christmas photos.

But hear me out.

I’ve been having a rather lovely rummage through the Christmas archives, and it’s reminded me why I love photographing little humans so much.

The fairy lights are pretty. The antlers are ridiculous. And there’s usually at least one child who has absolutely no intention of doing whatever their grown-up had in mind.

Excellent. Carry on.

Because when the decorations have been packed away, the Christmas outfits have been outgrown and you’ve forgotten where you hid the bloody wrapping paper, you’ve still got a portrait of your little human exactly as they were.

The missing teeth. The ridiculous expressions. The little personalities that somehow change so much from one Christmas to the next.

That’s the bit I love.

This year’s Christmas Minis are happening indoors at my little Hyggelig HQ studio or outdoors amongst the gum trees in Sunshine.

A little festive nonsense. A whole lot of personality. Absolutely no compulsory cheese.

10 minutes | $99 + GST | 2 digital images included

Outdoor shots show kids and a fluffy white Samoyed on a vintage suitcase under gum trees, with a retro plastic Santa and candy canes. We went to see @ngarrakulin_ ‘s mural in St Kilda for two reasons. I wanted to see his work in person, and I had a sneaky suspicion it would look bloody good behind the camera.

The mural celebrates the waters of Nairm (Port Phillip Bay), the movement of the tides and currents, and the connections between Country, community and culture. There’s so much movement in those lines. Kiddo went straight up to them, following their paths with her fingers and feeling the texture of the paint.

I took a few portraits of her while we were there, and Ngarra has kindly given me his okay to photograph other people alongside his mural too. I’m checking the location permissions before making any plans, but I’m curious… want to see yourself or your family photographed here?

Artwork by Ngarra Kulin, @ngarrakulin_, a Boonwurrung and Wiradjuri artist. It’s worth seeing the whole thing in person. 🧡

Description: A child approaches Ngarra Kulin’s mural in St Kilda and follows its winding lines with her hand. The reel moves through portraits of her playing and posing in front of the textured artwork, then pulls back to show more of the mural. Its flowing patterns use warm red and orange against grey.

I photographed this family earlier this year. They’re close to our hearts. Their eldest plays soccer with our kiddo, so we know them from the sidelines as well.

Jackie was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in April. Since then, she’s been through two surgeries and five months of chemo, and she’s now been offered a place in a clinical trial.

Her husband Henry is taking on his first HYROX to raise money for the Jreissati Pancreatic Centre at Epworth. In Henry’s words, Jackie wouldn’t be here today without the centre. He also reckons that if she can get through everything she has, he can get through a HYROX. I think we can all get behind him on that one.

It feels strange to ask the internet to help a family I know in real life, but here goes. If you’re able to donate, Henry’s fundraising link is in my bio. Or if you can share this post, that helps too.

Sending so much love to Jackie, Henry and their kids. We’re right behind you, Henry ❤️💜

I don’t remember having this photograph taken…. But I remember that jumper.

I remember absolutely loving it. The blue knit, the silver thread running through it, and especially those white stripes. They were soft and fluffy, almost mohair-ish, and apparently that particular piece of information has been sitting somewhere in my brain waiting for this photograph to dig it back out.

That’s the funny thing about old photographs. Sometimes the photograph itself isn’t the memory at all.

It’s a trapdoor into everything around it.

What something felt like. Who made it. Where you lived. The thing you wore constantly. The thing you refused to wear again. The people who were there.

I’ve spent nearly twenty years photographing other people’s families, and apparently I’m still discovering exactly how much an ordinary photograph can hold.

Not bad for a slightly discoloured old studio portrait.

The older child on the left wears a blue knitted jumper with soft white stripes and silver thread. The younger child wears a checked shirt under a burgundy knitted vest. Across the images, text appears: “I remember this jumper,” then “I remember how soft the white yarn was as I ran my fingers across it
